Iowa House Democrats walk out of Statehouse, temporarily stalling action on 2 gun-rights bills
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ' Iowa House Democrats have walked out of the Statehouse and temporarily stalled debate on two gun rights measures. But Republicans have the option of eventually taking action by themselves.
House Democratic Leader Kevin McCarthy accused Republicans on Wednesday of not giving him proper notice of the legislation. GOP leaders say Democrats were advised well in advance.
McCarthy tells The Associated Press that Democrats are together in Des Moines and aren't "planning to come back anytime soon."
McCarthy acknowledges House rules allow the 100-member chamber to convene and approve measures with a simple majority, so Republicans can choose to resume work because they hold 60 seats.
House Speaker Kraig Paulsen says Republicans are pondering their next move. But he made clear GOP lawmakers ultimately will stop waiting for Democrats to return.
