Irish fire up Rugby World Cup by beating Australia; Springboks crush Fiji; Pumas rip Romania
HAMILTON, New Zealand (AP) ' Defending champion South Africa dazzled in a 49-3 win over Fiji, while Australia's vaunted backs were smothered in a 15-6 defeat to an impassioned Ireland team in the Rugby World Cup's first major upset.
In Saturday's first match, Argentina rebounded from an opening loss to England by beating Romania 43-8.
The Irish did not win any of their four warmup matches last month. But they outsmarted and outsmucled the Wallabies in the rain, shaking up the playoff possibilities.
If Ireland holds on to win Pool C, it likely will avoid meeting New Zealand, Australia or South Africa in the early playoffs.
