Item at NY airport deemed not a threat but next shift wasn't told, prompts scare hours later
NEW YORK (AP) ' Authorities say a screener at New York City's LaGuardia Airport spotted a suspicious-looking item in a carry-on bag, tested it for explosives and determined it did not pose a threat.
But the incident caused a security scare hours later.
Workers on the next shift saw the item, couldn't figure out what it was ' and called the bomb squad.
The TSA says the item was a homeopathic medical device that could be mistaken for two pipe bombs. It was discovered at 11:30 a.m. Monday.
The agency says in a statement that because of its appearance the item wasn't allowed through the checkpoint. It says the owner surrendered it voluntarily.
The TSA says the Port Authority bomb squad was called "out of an abundance of caution."
