Joplin, Mo., tornado survivors seek disaster recovery lessons from Hurricane Katrina kin
NEW ORLEANS (AP) ' A group of community leaders from the tornado-ravaged town of Joplin, Mo., is trying to learn disaster recovery lessons from Hurricane Katrina survivors to take back home.
A busload of two dozen bank executives, hospital administrators and church workers rode through the night to arrive in New Orleans early Thursday morning. They spent the day helping to rebuild homes in the Gentilly and Mid-City neighborhoods under the guidance of the nonprofit St. Bernard Project.
The trip is sponsored by Rebuild Joplin, a group affiliated with the New Orleans nonprofit.
It's a partnership meant to overcome geographic distance, cultural differences and community size ' all in the name of creating a template that organizers hope will help other cities recover from natural disasters in the future.
