Judge nearly stopped Tenn. mosque construction
Local Tenn. judge almost stopped construction of mosque before federal judge intervened
By The Associated Press

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) A local Tennessee judge says he planned to stop construction on a new mosque before a federal judge intervened.

The Associated Press obtained orders filed Friday by Chancellor Robert Corlew in Murfreesboro.

Corlew wrote that he was preparing to order the county to stop construction of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro after he ruled that the public was not adequately informed about the meeting where it was approved.

The judge says the federal ruling superseded him and he also stayed all his decisions in the two-year-old case.

The mosque and federal prosecutors persuaded a federal judge Wednesday to intervene and clear the way for the mosque to open before Ramadan ends.

A construction supervisor said Thursday that the building could need another two weeks of work.
