Judge to rule on presidential historian's release
Judge to decide on release of presidential historian charged with stealing historical papers
By The Associated Press

BALTIMORE (AP) ' A federal judge will decide whether to release a presidential historian charged with conspiring to steal historical documents from archives in several states.

Prosecutor James Warwick argued Friday in favor of keeping Barry Landau in federal custody. Landau and an assistant are charged with taking documents from the Maryland Historical Society and other archives. The judge postponed her decision until Monday afternoon to give officials time to review Landau's case.

Warwick said Friday that prosecutors are concerned Landau poses a flight risk and may try to destroy evidence or influence others involved in the case if he is released.

The judge allowed the release of Landau's assistant, Jason Savedoff (SA'-veh-dof), to his mother on $250,000 bail.
