Judge: Barnes Foundation must be reimbursed legal fees by opponents of its move to Philly
PHILADELPHIA (AP) ' The judge who has presided over the long legal battle surrounding the Barnes Foundation said it must be reimbursed $40,000 in legal fees stemming from a fight over moving its world-famous art collection to Philadelphia from suburban Merion.
Judge Stanley Ott has ordered members of Friends of the Barnes Foundation and their attorney, Sam Stretton, to pay a total of $25,000. Ott also ordered another man who filed a separate legal claim to reimburse the foundation $15,000.
The citizens' group says it's being punished for trying to seek justice. Stretton says they'll appeal the judge's decision.
The Barnes Foundation asked for the reimbursement, saying it incurred nearly $65,000 in fees and costs to address the petitions in court. A spokesman declined to comment on the judge's decision dated Friday.
