Fraternity that pushed for King monument holds its own dedication ceremony on National Mall
WASHINGTON (AP) ' Members of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity had worked for more than a quarter-century to get a monument on the National Mall honoring Martin Luther King Jr., one of their own.
So even though the approach of Hurricane Irene led organizers to postpone Sunday's official dedication, the fraternity went ahead with its own ceremony Friday at the memorial site.
Martin Luther King III accepted the 30-foot tall monument honoring his father. Fraternity brothers dressed in black suits or gold jackets marched quietly to the memorial.
