Kurt Ziebart, auto rust-proofing pioneer, dies
Kurt Ziebart, developer of car rust-proofing process and founder of global chain, dies at 91
By The Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) ' Kurt Ziebart, inventor of the Ziebart rust-proofing process, has died at age 91.

The Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City says Ziebart died Monday at his home in Williamsburg, about 10 miles east of Traverse City.

Ziebart was born in Kiesslingswalde in West Prussia, Germany, which became part of Poland after World War II. He became a certified master auto mechanic and ran a repair business in Germany before he and wife, Edith, immigrated to America in 1953.

His wife said the idea for developing a rust-proofing process came when the couple hosted friends from Germany, who remarked on the poor state of U.S. vehicles. Kurt Ziebart went to work on ways to protect new cars from the ravages of water and road salt.
