Calif. man accused of $228 million investment scam dies while fighting extradition from France
LOS ANGELES (AP) ' A man charged in Los Angeles with running a $228 million real estate investment scam has died in a French prison.
A U.S. Embassy official in Paris confirms Tuesday that 62-year-old Bruce Friedman died recently.
Friedman had been jailed since his arrest in Cannes in 2010 and was appealing extradition.
Federal prosecutors in Los Angeles charged Friedman with fraud. Authorities say he bilked hundreds of people, sometimes taking their entire life savings, and spent it on luxuries. He also donated large sums to charity.
A judge froze his assets in 2009 and appointed a receiver to recover investor's money.
Receiver David Gill tells the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/ypYnlx) that recovery efforts will continue despite Friedman's death.
