Lawmaker doubts Australia will allow gay marriage
Australian parliamentary committee chairman expects lawmakers will maintain gay marriage ban
By The Associated Press

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) ' The chairman of an Australian parliamentary committee that examined gay law reform says he expects lawmakers will maintain a ban on gay marriage when the contentious issue is voted on later this year.

The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Social Policy and Legal Affairs attracted an unprecedented public response while examining two bills that would overturn Australia's ban on same-sex couples marrying.

The examination attracted 276,437 public submissions with 64 percent favoring gay marriage.

But the committee's eight members were divided and their report published Monday makes no recommendation. Chairman Graham Perrett, who supports gay marriage, says he does not believe most lawmakers share his views.
