Lawyer: Portuguese model charged in castration killing in NYC hotel room had 'manic episode'
NEW YORK (AP) ' A defense lawyer says a Portuguese model was suffering from a "manic episode" on the night authorities say he castrated and killed a Portuguese TV personality in a New York hotel room.
Tuesday's mention of a "manic episode" provides a peek at how Renato Seabra's (ren-AH'-toh say-AH'-brahz) lawyer is likely to flesh out a planned insanity defense. Lawyer David Touger (TOW'-guhr) declined to elaborate Tuesday on the model's psychiatric condition.
The 21-year-old Seabra has pleaded not guilty to murder in Carlos Castro's Jan. 7 death. Castro's mutilated, bloodied body was found in a room they were sharing.
Seabra was a contestant on a Portuguese talent-search show. The 65-year-old Castro was a TV personality and writer.
Friends have said the two were a couple, but Seabra's mother has disputed that.
