Lawyers seek release of NH woman accused of Rwanda war crimes, lies to get US citizenship
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) ' Lawyers for a New Hampshire woman prosecutors say lied about her role in the 1994 Rwanda genocide to obtain U.S. citizenship want her released from jail.
Lawyers for Beatrice Munyenyezi (moon-yehn-YEH'-zee) said Thursday federal prosecutors failed to convince a jury of her guilt. Jurors last week announced they were deadlocked after four days of deliberations that followed 12 days of testimony.
Munyenyezi has been in custody since her June 2010 indictment. Her lawyers claim federal agents misled the court about the strength of their case in opposing prior attempts to gain her release.
Prosecutors say she was an extremist Hutu who killed and Tutsi people in Rwanda. They oppose her release.
Her second trial is scheduled to begin May 15. No date has been set on the motion for bail.
