Some high praise today from those Golden Eagles and there was plenty to go around for the others. The nation’s leader in hits, Dylan Burdeaux, has been tabbed as Conference USA Player of the Year. Matt Wallner as Freshman of the Year, Scott Berry as Keith LeClair Coach of the Year, and Chad Caillet as assistant Coach of the Year. USM also leads the league in first-team selections with five: Burdeaux, Braley, McCarty, Nick Sandlin, and Colt Smith. Wallner and fellow outfielder Mason Irby landed on the second team, giving Southern Miss the most total selections as well with seven. Burdeaux said, "It's a team award. I mean you've got to look at being a leadoff hitter with the amount of RBI's, that doesn't happen without the guys in front of me. And all of my numbers are definitely because of the people that surround me every single day in that lineup." Wallner said, “Bigger from the team aspect. Never dreamed we'd be able to do what we've been able to do as a team, which has just been awesome. But definitely it's been a pretty incredible year that hopefully we can just keep going, starting tomorrow.” Burdeaux is the first USM player to ever win Player of the Year and Wallner just the second to take home Freshmen of the Year honors.   [READ MORE]

Dating back to 2011 and forecasting through 2019, the Conference USA Baseball tournament will have been played in the state of Mississippi eight out of those nine years. The next three have dibs on Biloxi. For the first time in the history of the event, MGM Park is serving as the host site in 2017, taking over for Pete Taylor Park after a three year run in Hattiesburg. Two years before that, the eight team double elimination field was played at Trustmark Park in Pearl, the last neutral site of the tournament prior to MGM Park. Despite having the home state advantage in five out of the last six years, Southern Miss only took advantage of that once in 2016. This year, the Golden Eagles will be looking to repeat as tournament champions for the first time ever, but it’s not always that simple. Conference USA Assistant Commissioner Russ Anderson said, “Well, certainly with the great season that Southern Miss is having is going to help boost ticket sales even further, create more interest in the event, but at the same time this is a great baseball league that is very deep, so we're going to see outstanding baseball and we may even some surprises here this week. Last year we had that great championship game. Two years ago we had the No. 8 seed win the tournament, so you never know what's going to happen on Championship Sunday.” Tournament play will get rolling at 9 a.m. tomorrow with game one between six seed Rice and three seed Florida Atlantic.   [READ MORE]
