Linda Lavin to lead 'Prince of Broadway' cast, alongside Sebastian Arcelus and Sierra Boggess
NEW YORK (AP) ' Linda Lavin knows what she'll be doing after she takes "The Lyons" to Broadway ' another Broadway show.
Producers of "Prince of Broadway" announced Tuesday that the Tony Award winner and former "Alice" icon has signed up to star in a show about Hal Prince, joining Sebastian Arcelus and Sierra Boggess.
The musical will open on Broadway in November 2012 at a theatre to be announced later.
Prince is the director or producer behind some of the world's most beloved shows, including "The Pajama Game," ''West Side Story," ''Fiddler on the Roof," ''Cabaret," ''Company," ''Follies," ''Evita" and "The Phantom of the Opera."
The new musical will be co-directed by Prince, co-directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Susan Stroman, and feature a book by Tony Award nominee David Thompson.
Prince gave Lavin her first big break while directing the Broadway musical "It's a Bird ... It's a Plane ... It's Superman." She went on to earn a Tony nomination in Neil Simon's "Last of the Red Hot Lovers" in 1969, and the Tony for another Simon play in 1987, "Broadway Bound." In between, she starred in "Alice," singing the TV show's theme song and becoming an icon for working moms.
The 74-year-old Lavin is in high demand these days, starring in Nicky Silver's play "The Lyons" on Broadway next month after winning critical acclaim in it off-Broadway last year. She also was in two recent hits ' "Follies" at Kennedy Center and "Other Desert Cities" at Lincoln Center.
