London calling: NY's famed Apollo Theater exports Amateur Night for limited engagement
NEW YORK (AP) ' The legendary Apollo Theater in New York's Harlem is exporting its Amateur Night to London for a limited engagement.
The showplace that launched careers from Stevie Wonder to the Jackson 5 is partnering with London's Hackney Empire theater.
The London show on July 14 will pit aspiring artists from the United States and Great Britain.
The Apollo said Tuesday that four winners of the May 23 New York semifinals will get expenses-paid trips to London.
Semifinals to pick four amateurs in London will be held in June.
Since 1934, Amateur Night has been one of New York's most popular live events.
London's Hackney, built in 1901, has hosted stars like Charlie Chaplin and Houdini.
