By The Associated Press

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) ' Family members say longtime CBS News correspondent Robert Pierpoint ' who covered the Korean War, the Kennedy assassination and several presidential administrations ' has died in California.

Daughter Marta Pierpoint says her father died Saturday at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital of complications from surgery after falling and breaking his hip on Oct. 12. He was 86.

Robert Pierpoint retired in 1990 after a 40-year career.

After making his name covering the Korean War, a role he reprised when he provided his radio voice for the final episode of "MASH" in 1983, Pierpoint became a White House correspondent during the Dwight D. Eisenhower administration, a position he would hold through the Jimmy Carter administration.

He is survived by his wife and four children, including actor Eric Pierpoint.
