Major Republican 'super PAC' American Crossroads raised $51 million in 2011 to oppose Obama
By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) ' A Republican "super" political committee and its nonprofit arm say they have raised $51 million this year in an effort to defeat President Barack Obama.

The American Crossroads super PAC is among the first groups whose finances are being reported on Tuesday. Financial documents obtained by The Associated Press show Crossroads has $15.6 million in cash on hand to spend on general election ads this year.

Super PACs have had a major effect this primary season. Such groups are the products of a 2010 Supreme Court ruling that removed restrictions on corporate and union spending in federal elections.

The groups have until midnight Tuesday to file their reports to the Federal Election Commission.
