Malaysian customs seize 700 African elephant tusks headed to China, the 3rd haul since July
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) ' Malaysian authorities have confiscated some 700 African elephant tusks worth about 3 million ringgit ($1 million) destined for China. It was the third seizure of illegal ivory in the country since July.
Customs official Zainul Abidin Taib says the tusks were packed in gunny sacks and hidden in two containers of recycled plastic from Tanzania that were seized last Friday.
Wildlife trade monitoring network TRAFFIC on Tuesday lauded the ivory seizures. The group said it underscored Malaysia's status as a transshipment hub for illegal ivory fueled by rising demand in China.
Malaysian customs seized more than 1,000 African elephant tusks in two earlier shipments. No arrests have been made but Zainal said investigations were ongoing.
