Rory McIlroy makes quick turnaround with 69; Tiger Wood into contention with 68 at Memorial
DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) ' With one bad hole, Rory McIlroy began to wonder if this would be another short week at the Memorial.
Thanks to 17 other holes and a superb round with the putter, the defending U.S. Open champion made a quick recovery Thursday in the Memorial.
McIlroy made a quadruple-bogey 7 on his third hole of the opening round at Muirfield Village, but he had nine one-putt greens and chipped in for eagle for a 1-under 69.
Tiger Woods also recovered from one bad hole, when he made double bogey on the 18th in the middle of his round. He made birdie on three of the par 5s and shot 68.
Rory Sabbatini and Aaron Baddeley were among four players leading at 69 from the early starters on a firm, tough course.
