Mexican politico slammed for 'prostitute' remarks
Party asks Mexican politician to drop Senate bid after he says pretty women are prostitutes
By The Associated Press

MEXICO CITY (AP) ' A Mexican congressman who said all pretty women are prostitutes has been asked by his party to give up his bid to run for the Senate.

Mexico's former ruling party has been struggling to attract women voters, and the comments this week by Congressman Francisco Moreno Merino do not appear likely to help his Institutional Revolutionary Party.

A PRI statement Friday says party leaders have asked Moreno Merino to give up his bid for a Senate seat in July 1 elections.

In comments on the floor of congress, Moreno Merino trotted out what appeared to be a little-known folk saying about everyone having their defects. But part of the saying literally translates as "there are no pretty women who don't become prostitutes."

(This version CORRECTS first paragraph to say congressman rather than congressmen.)
