Sprint Nextel has a long waiting list of customers looking to buy its EVO, its new high-speed wireless phone from HTC Corp, an executive for the No. 3 U.S. mobile service said.
Sprint hopes that "fourth-generation," or 4G phones and services, will stem losses of customers who pay monthly bills and commit to long-term contracts. Depending on the launch timing, analysts say EVO should compete well against Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPhone.
Sprint will announce pricing and availability for the phone "shortly", said Dan Schulman, head of Sprint's prepaid business, during a webcast of a Jefferies investor conference on Wednesday.
The company expects to start selling the phone this summer when Apple is expected to debut a new iPhone.
Sprint hopes the EVO phone, expected to be the first 4G phone available in the United States, will give it a head start over rivals such as market leader Verizon Wireless, a venture of Verizon Communications <VZ.N> and Vodafone Group Plc <VOD.L>.
