Minot, ND, residents trickle back to sodden homes for first time since historic June flood
MINOT, N.D. (AP) ' It's a difficult day for dozens of people in Minot, N.D., who are seeing their flood-damaged homes for the first time.
Many of them cried Wednesday as they saw what the Souris (SUHR'-is) River did when it rose several feet deep on the main floors of their homes in northwest Minot. Others got to work right away trying to dry their houses out and salvage what they could.
James Warner says he can't imagine the damage being any worse. He says his wife couldn't bear to visit the house where they have lived for 25 years and raised their children.
Most of the 4,100 homes damaged in Minot did not have flood insurance. The city's mayor has said nearly one-fifth of the damaged homes may have to be demolished.
