Mom enters insanity plea in NY river tot-toss case
With prosecutors' OK, mother who tossed toddler into Hudson River enters insanity plea in NYC
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) ' A woman who tossed her toddler in the Hudson River has resolved the case by agreeing to a psychiatric evaluation and what could be indefinite hospitalization.

In an agreement with New York City prosecutors, Devi Silvia pleaded not guilty Friday because of mental disease. She acknowledged throwing her 19-month-old daughter into the river in May 2010, but said she didn't know what she was doing.

Doctors later diagnosed her with bipolar disorder.

Silvia jumped into the river after throwing the girl in. Both were rescued and survived, but prosecutors said the baby was blue and motionless when pulled from the roughly 50-degree water.

Silvia was charged with attempted murder.

She will be assessed for possible commitment to a state mental hospital. She's due back in court Jan. 11.
