Work suspended at Montana precious metals mine after fatality 1,200 feet beneath surface
BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) ' Federal officials say a central Montana precious metals mine is under a partial closure order as they investigate the death of a worker driving a piece of equipment 1,200 feet underground.
Amy Louviere with the Mine Safety and Health Administration says 42-year-old Dale Alan Madson was driving an open-cab haul truck Monday that went into a ditch. She says a rock bolt struck him in the neck.
Stillwater Mining Co. spokesman John Beaudry would not confirm the type of equipment Madson was driving but described the accident as isolated.
Stillwater Mining is the country's only producer of platinum and palladium, which are used in catalytic converters for cars, jewelry and in various industrial applications.
The mine near Nye employs about 900 people.
