Mourners gather for 5 Amish killed in NY crash
Amish mourners from NY, Pa. and Ohio gather for funerals of farmers killed in upstate NY wreck
By The Associated Press

WOODHULL, N.Y. (AP) ' The Amish community in two small towns in southwestern New York is gathering to mourn five farmers killed in a horrific traffic accident.

Mourners from across New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio began arriving Wednesday in horse-drawn wagons, cars and pickups for Friday's funerals in Woodhull and Jasper, where hundreds of Amish families have settled.

New York's Amish population has tripled since 2000 to around 13,000.

The victims, who ranged in age from 40 to 60, were touring farms in New York's Finger Lakes region Tuesday when a car passing a slow-moving tractor on a bend sent their van careening into the tractor. Ten other people were injured, eight of them Amish.

The car driver, Steven Eldridge, is being held on charges of criminally negligent homicide and driving while intoxicated.
