Myanmar's Suu Kyi beginning first parliament campaign tour in nation's southern countryside
DAWEI, Myanmar (AP) ' Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is making her first campaign tour into Myanmar's countryside since registering to run for parliament.
Sunday's campaign stop in the southern town of Dawei follows a series of unprecedented government reforms in the long-repressed Southeast Asian nation where Suu Kyi spent 15 years under house arrest. The nominally civilian government has released hundreds of political prisoners, reached cease-fire deals with ethnic rebels and increased press freedoms.
The government will remain dominated by the military and the ruling party even if Suu Kyi and her supporters win parliamentary seats in the April 1 by-election. But victory would be highly symbolic and give the Nobel Peace laureate a voice in government for the first time.
