Highway 57 in Jackson County is closed after an 18-wheeler crashed into the bridge by Red Creek Road this morning. It’s possible the bridge will have to be replaced before the heavily traveled area can be re-opened. A thousand pound track hoe carried by an 18-wheeler smashed into the bridge by Red Creek Road in Jackson County. The severe damage from the wreck has caused the Highway 57 area to close. Those who use Highway 57 as a hurricane evacuation route will have to find another way. Chase Elkins with Mississippi Highway Patrol said, “It’s a heavily traveled area every morning and every evening, but it’s also a heavily traveled area for evacuations such as hurricanes or a natural disaster.” Before the bridge was struck, the Mississippi Department of Transportation had the steel truss structure above this part of Highway 57 up for sale. The track hoe struck the tress section of the bridge and punched holes into the bridge deck. Cape Jones with MDOT said, “There’s some pretty good damage. Of course, we’re still assessing the damage, but the bridge will be closed for the foreseeable future.” Environmental officials tell News 25 the situation could have been worse if the hydraulic oil that was spilled leaked into the creek on the side of the bridge. Nick Hatten with MDEQ said, “Petroleum products and diesel fuel are a danger to the environment. We are putting absorbent material down and we will pick it up. Therefore preventing any petroleum product from entering the environment.” Transportation officials will be putting detour signs as both directions of the bridge between Vestry Road and Berry Road remain closed until further notice. As for alternative routes: “MDOT would tell you to take other state routes which would include 26 to 63 back to I-10,” said Jones. The bridge was built in 1959.   [READ MORE]
