Residents in Mont Vernon, NH, to vote on whether to rename fishing spot called Jew Pond
MONT VERNON, N.H. (AP) ' Residents of a rural New Hampshire town are voting on whether to rename a fishing spot that's been called Jew Pond since the 1920s.
The proposal is up for a vote Tuesday night at a town meeting in Mont Vernon.
For many in town, the quest to change the name is much ado over a muddy, manmade body of water. But for recent transplants and town health officer Rich Masters, it's a way to banish an offensive title recorded on at least one official map.
Masters says the name is disrespectful and should be changed. Town Historical Society member Zoe Fimbel says it's part of the town's history and should be left alone.
The pond has been called by many names. Masters says it originally was named Spring Pond.
