NRC chair: No timetable for Cal nuke plant restart
NRC chair promises thorough review of idled Cal nuke plant, calls talk of restart 'premature'
By The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) ' The chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission says it's too soon to talk about a potential restart at the idled San Onofre nuclear plant on the California coast.

The statement Monday by Chairman Gregory Jaczko (YAZ-koh) comes just days after a company executive said operator Southern California Edison was hoping for a possible June restart of the troubled plant.

The twin reactors have been offline for more than three months while investigators look into excessive wear on tubing in the plant's massive steam generators.

Jaczko says the agency will take "whatever time is necessary" for a thorough review, and the NRC is waiting for more documentation on repairs at the plant.

A restart requires federal approval.

Jaczko says any discussion of a potential restart is "clearly premature."
