Libya NTC head pledges new government will work with world in striving for peace
UNITED NATIONS (AP) ' The chairman of Libya's transitional government is telling world leaders that his nation has returned to the international community committed to peace, human rights, free elections and reconciliation.
An array of world leaders including the U.S. and French presidents who backed the National Transitional Council welcomed the pledge by its leader, Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, at a high-level meeting Tuesday.
Abdul-Jalil came to the United Nations after the U.N. General Assembly voted Friday to give Libya's seat to the council after Moammar Gadhafi's ouster in a seven-month civil war.
Earlier, President Barack Obama told the Libyan people that the world would stand beside them as they rebuild the country.
