Gettysburg statue honoring NY Artillery repaired, back in place after 2006 vandalism
GETTYSBURG, Pa. (AP) ' A massive statue honoring New York soldiers who fought at the Battle of Gettysburg is back in place five years after it was toppled and damaged by vandals.
Workers reinstalled the 600-pound bronze statue to the 4th New York Artillery on Monday.
The statue had been pulled from its stone pedestal in 2006 and dragged more than 150 feet. The head of the artilleryman was removed and his ramrod torn free. The cost of the damage was about $50,000.
The vandals were never found despite the offering of a $30,000 reward. The same statue was similarly vandalized in 1995.
Battlefield officials have increased security in response to acts of vandalism. Volunteers also patrol the grounds at the site of the key Civil War battle.
