Some New York Muslims feel unfairly targeted despite government promises of partnership
NEW YORK (AP) ' Some New York Muslims feel targeted by law enforcement and singled out as suspicious because of their religion.
Over the past decade, the New York Police Department sent undercover officers into Muslim neighborhoods and informants into mosques to detect possible terrorist activities. At the same time, the NYPD and other government officials in New York and around the country have launched community outreach campaigns to drill home the message that Muslim communities are partners, not foes.
A months-long investigation by The Associated Press, published Wednesday, revealed the NYPD's aggressive tactics and how it has collected intelligence in communities where there is no evidence of wrongdoing.
The NYPD has denied that such programs exist.
