NY Rep. Slaughter aiming for May return to Washington after breaking leg in fall
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) ' Two weeks after breaking her leg in a fall, New York Rep. Louise Slaughter says she's undergoing painful rehabilitation but hopes to return to Washington early next month.
The 82-year-old Democrat and her doctor spoke to reporters during a news conference Tuesday at the University of Rochester Medical Center, where she expects to stay for the next week and a half while spending about three hours a day in physical therapy.
Slaughter broke her left femur on April 2 after tripping on uneven pavement in New York City, where she was attending an event honoring women in politics.
First elected to Congress in 1986, she's seeking re-election in her newly redrawn western New York district.
She's being challenged by Republican Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks.
