NY jury hears tapes about arms deal with Russian
DEA informant tells NY jury that ex-Soviet pilot repeatedly promised weapons for rebels
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) ' A New York jury has spent a day hearing taped conversations in which a former Soviet officer on trial on charges he tried to supply arms to anti-American rebels talks about weapons.

A U.S. government witness testified Wednesday it was no surprise Viktor Bout (boot) was talking about the weapons because he was even drawing a list of them at a meeting just before his arrest.

Bout was arrested in Thailand in March 2008 after he was caught in a sting operation set up by the Drug Enforcement Administration. He was transferred to the United States last year.

Bout is known as the Merchant of Death. He has pleaded not guilty and says he's a legitimate businessman. If convicted of conspiracy charges, he could face life in prison.
