NYC mayor likely to testify at operative's trial
NYC mayor likely to testify at trial of political operative charged with bilking $1M from him
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) ' Two people familiar with the trial say New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is expected to testify Monday against a campaign consultant charged with scamming him out of more than $1 million.

The two people spoke Friday on condition of anonymity because the plans hadn't yet been made public.

Bloomberg would be a witness for prosecutors. They say Republican operative John Haggerty helped himself to money he got the mayor to give to the state Independence Party to finance poll-monitoring during his 2009 re-election bid.

Haggerty says he did the work and didn't steal the money. His lawyers are raising questions about Bloomberg's campaign finances and practices. They're likely to ask the mayor about that, but prosecutors may try to get a judge to limit how much they can delve into.
