NYC zoo welcomes lamb born as Irene approached
In like a lamb: NYC's Central Park Zoo welcomes lamb named Irene, born as storm approached
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) ' New York's Central Park Zoo is welcoming a lamb that was born as staff members were readying the zoo for Tropical Storm Irene.

The 8-pound lamb was born in the Tisch Children's Zoo on Saturday. Zoo staffers named her Irene Hope.

Assistant Curator Susan Cardillo says the little lamb was a surprise because sheep rarely give birth in late August.

After making sure she was healthy, zoo workers returned Irene Hope to her mother to nurse. After the storm passed, Cardillo was relieved to find lamb and ewe resting peacefully.

Cardillo says that on a day of great uncertainty, the lamb brought smiles to everyone at the zoo.

Irene Hope's mother is Truffle and her father is Sid. She is a Southdown sheep, a breed that originated in Sussex, England.
