NYPD anti-terror program exposes split between New Yorkers and people outside the big city
NEW YORK (AP) ' The New York Police Department's surveillance program targeting Muslims is exposing a bitter divide between New Yorkers and their neighbors across the Hudson River.
Newark, N.J., resident Clarence Matthews says he's angry that New York police have been casing New Jersey neighborhoods in search of any kind of suspicious behavior. And he's not alone. The state's governor and the local head of the FBI have criticized the NYPD, too.
Many New Yorkers say they didn*t pay much attention to the surveillance program until details of the NYPD*s work outside New York surfaced in February.
Polltaker Maurice Carroll says the criticism from outside the city is having an effect. He says New York voters who believe the police are unfairly targeting Muslims increased by five percentage points this month.
