Navy sailor arrested in Conn. over AK-47 rifle
Navy sailor assigned to Conn. submarine base charged with illegal possession of AK-47 rifle

WATERFORD, Conn. (AP) ' A Navy sailor assigned to a Connecticut submarine base has been arrested on a charge of illegal possession of an AK-47 rifle.

Waterford police say 24-year-old Cory Dion Caldwell was arrested Monday after an investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, NCIS.

Police Sgt. Mark Willard says Caldwell is a Georgia native assigned to the USS Springfield at Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton (GRAH'-tun).

Willard says the rifle was seized during a search of Caldwell's Waterford residence that also turned up ammunition and three handguns.

Caldwell is charged with illegal possession of an assault weapon and illegal transportation of an assault weapon into Connecticut. He's being held on $200,000 bond and can't be reached for comment. He's to be arraigned Tuesday.
