Navy strips Silver Star from its ex-deputy assistant secretary jailed for child pornography
SAN DIEGO (AP) ' A document shows that the Navy has taken away the Silver Star from its former deputy assistant secretary under the Clinton administration who is serving time for child pornography.
In an Aug. 9, 2010, memorandum for the chief of naval personnel obtained by The Associated Press, Navy Secretary Ray Mabus says the Navy stripped Wade R. Sanders of the military's third-highest honor. It cited new information surrounding the incident for which the award was made and the processing of the award itself.
It is not immediately known whether Sanders' criminal record played a role in the decision.
The Navy says Sanders received the Silver Star in 1992 for his courage in battling the Viet Cong in 1969.
Sanders is serving a three-year federal prison sentence for possessing child pornography.
