Nevada doctor indicted in alleged stem cell scam
Nevada physician accused of participating in stem cell scam with fake doc already facing trial
By The Associated Press

LAS VEGAS (AP) ' A southern Nevada pediatrician faces federal charges that he used experimental and unapproved stem cell implants to fleece investors and chronically ill patients.

U.S. Attorney Daniel Bogden says Dr. Ralph Conti of Henderson is due Thursday before a federal magistrate judge in Las Vegas on an indictment alleging he performed procedures on more than 30 patients in 2006 at the direction of Alfred Sapse.

Prosecutors say the 85-year-old Sapse claimed to be a retired physician who studied in Ukraine, but had no medical license in Nevada or any other state.

Sapse was already named in a July 2010 indictment alleging he created a Las Vegas company called StemCell Pharma Inc. in May 2005 as part of the scheme.

Wednesday's indictment accuses both men of mail and wire fraud and conspiracy.
