Wildfires burn out of control in NM, Colo.; National Guard deployed to help with evacuations
By The Associated Press

LAPORTE, Colo. (AP) ' Two large wildfires are still burning out of control in Colorado and New Mexico, keeping hundreds of people out of their homes.

The Colorado fire had grown to 58 square miles on Monday. It's burning in a mountainous area about 15 miles west of Fort Collins and has damaged or destroyed at least 18 structures.

In New Mexico, a 42-square-mile wildfire near the mountain community of Ruidoso has damaged or destroyed 35 structures. Some evacuated residents were allowed to return Sunday but warned to be ready to leave again.

More National Guard troops have been deployed to help mainly with evacuation efforts.

National Guard helicopters are also assigned to both fires.
