TSA unveils security technology at Newark airport that discontinues use of naked images
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ' Newark Liberty International Airport became the first New York-area airport to install body scanning technology that will replace a system that was harshly criticized for invading travelers' privacy by displaying naked images.
Transportation Security Administration officials unveiled the software at the airport Friday, where more than 8 million passengers boarded planes last year. The Newark airport is one of 40 airports around the country where TSA is installing the technology over the next few months. Eventually, TSA wants the system in every airport.
The new system uses a screen that displays a gray silhouette of a generic body. With a traveler in front of it, yellow boxes appear on the silhouette denoting items that needed to be removed such as cellphones or keys.
