Niagara Falls boat captain retiring after 36 years; Maid of Mist ferries passengers near falls
NIAGARA FALLS, Ontario (AP) ' A tour boat captain who's spent 36 years ferrying passengers toward the base of Niagara Falls is retiring.
Senior Capt. Malcolm Bunting worked his last shift at the Maid of the Mist steamship line on Wednesday.
Maid of the Mist boats have been carrying passengers against the current since 1846. Passengers don rain gear and get soaking wet as the boats head along the U.S.-Canadian border straight toward the falls, offering spectacular views of towering walls of rushing water.
Bunting's famous passengers have included Princess Diana, Prince Andrew, Sarah Ferguson, former President Jimmy Carter and Joan Rivers. He's even had roles in an episode of "General Hospital" and in the movie "Superman 2."
The 63-year-old Bunting says he's never heard a complaint from the roughly 16 million passengers he's carried.
