Nursing home shooting trial nearing conclusion
Closing arguments scheduled following month-long trial in NC nursing home shooting case
By The Associated Press

CARTHAGE, N.C. (AP) ' Closing arguments are expected to begin in the trial of a man accused of killing eight people in a shooting at a nursing home in central North Carolina.

Prosecutors spent 13 days presenting witness testimony and physical evidence to make their case that Robert Stewart was on a rampage looking for his estranged wife, who worked at the Pinelake Health and Rehabilitation Center in Carthage.

Defense lawyers countered by saying Stewart was so disoriented by depression and a mixture of prescription medication that he isn't legally responsible for his actions in the 2009 shooting.

Once both sides present their final arguments Thursday, jurors are set to begin deliberations Friday. If convicted, Stewart could face the death penalty.
