OAS Secretary General Insulza says Paraguay should not be suspended for impeaching president
WASHINGTON (AP) ¯¯¯ The leader of the Organization of American States says that Paraguay should not be suspended as a member for impeaching its president.
OAS Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza (hoh-ZAY' mee-GEHL' ihn-SOOL'-zah) made the announcement after a fact-finding mission to Paraguay, where he met with supporters of ousted President Fernando Lugo as well as the political opponents who voted him out of office for "poor performance" last month.
Other regional groups such as Unasur and Mercosur swiftly suspended Paraguay, calling it an "institutional coup" that threatens democracies around the region. But Inzulza says suspending Paraguay from the OAS would only make it more difficult to influence what happens next. He says the OAS should increase its involvement and supervise preparations for the upcoming presidential elections.
