Ahead of UN General Assembly, Obama, Merkel discuss European financial crisis, Mideast peace
WASHINGTON (AP) ' President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel (AHN'-geh-lah MEHR'-kuhl) are continuing their consultations on the European financial crisis.
The White House says the two leaders spoke by telephone Monday and agreed that concerted action will be needed in the coming months to address current economic challenges and help the global economic recovery.
Obama and Merkel also discussed the Middle East peace process. Obama thanked the chancellor for her involvement in efforts to encourage the Israelis and Palestinians to return to direct peace talks.
They spoke before Obama headed to New York for a meeting of the U.N. General Assembly that Merkel was not expected to attend.
