Obama praises auto industry rescue, accuses critics of rewriting history
WASHINGTON (AP) ' President Barack Obama says critics of his auto industry bailout are rewriting history. He tells the United Autoworkers that Republican assertions that union members profited from the rescue efforts are a "load of you know what."
Obama delivered a staunchly pro-union speech Tuesday to the UAW just as voters in Michigan went to the polls to cast their ballots in the state's Republican nominating contest.
Obama was distinguishing himself from Republican presidential candidates such as Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum, both of whom have said they would not have used government money to save General Motors and Chrysler. Romney on Sunday said Obama favored the UAW in the bailout and that the president was "paying off the people that supported him."
