US officials visit students at 'mall school' built in Joplin after devastating tornado
JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) ' Students who attend classes in a former big box store built after the tornado that tore through Joplin destroyed their high school say they look forward to school, in spite of the storm that left their district in ruins.
Students told Education Secretary Arne Duncan during a visit Thursday that support from school officials and teachers has made things easier. Duncan was joined in Joplin by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.
The May 22 storm that killed 162 people also destroyed or damaged 10 schools in the area. Some schools were consolidated, and Joplin's middle school is temporarily in an industrial park.
The 11th- and 12th-grade students attend class in a former box store near a Sears Auto Center and a Logan's Roadhouse restaurant.
