Order signed for Sept. execution of Troy Davis
Georgia plans September execution for high-profile death row inmate Troy Davis
By The Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) ' A defense attorney says Georgia is scheduling an execution later this month of an inmate who has won supporters with his claims of innocence in a 1989 police officer's slaying.

Defense attorney Brian Kammer said a judge signed an order setting an execution for Troy Davis between Sept. 21 and Sept. 28. Kammer provided a copy of the order to The Associated Press. It is the fourth time since 2007 that state officials have scheduled the Georgia inmate to die.

Davis has become a focal point for the international anti-death penalty movement, attracting high-profile figures like former President Jimmy Carter.

The Georgia Attorney General's office didn't immediately comment.

Davis claims he wasn't the one who killed off-duty Savannah police officer Mark MacPhail. But a federal judge rejected his claim, and the U.S. Supreme Court turned down another appeal in March.
